The Nissart

Aquit si parla Nissart!

Nice has its own language, don't tell a Niçois what their dialect is because Nissart is a language in its own right: it has its own grammar, literature and a rich history.

Niçard, like Nice itself, has been influenced by its history; it is a blend of Provençal, Piedmontese, Italian and French without losing its distinct identity.

Even today, the associations dedicated to the traditions of the County of Nice strive to protect, preserve, and promote the cultural heritage of Nice, its language, and its customs. If you've ever taken a look around Old Nice, you'll see that all the streets are signposted in both Niçard (the local dialect) and French.
