Wine in Nice? That's news to me!
And yet the story doesn't start yesterday, let's go back in time to discover one of the oldest vineyards in France!
It was the Greeks who introduced viticulture to the Nice region as early as the 5th century BC, establishing a trading post, Nikaia, on the castle hill. The Romans, present at Cemenelum (Cimiez), took over, expanding vine cultivation.
It was only in 1550 that the first estate was created: Bellet was born.
The vineyard, which covered more than 100 hectares at the beginning of the 19th century, even obtained AOC status for its wine in 1941.
Today, 9 vineyards offer quality wine on more than 50 hectares of vines, most of which have opted for sustainable agriculture.
Very specific grape varieties:
White wines: Chardonnay, Rolle or Clairette
Red wines: Folle Noire, Cinsault, Grenache
Rosé wines: Brachet/Braquet, Grenache, Cinsault.
Dionysus had better watch out!
