Artists in Nice - Henri Matisse

Matisse first came to Nice in 1917 to treat bronchitis. Charmed by the city, its climate, and the Mediterranean light, he decided to settle there. Thus began his "Nice Period," during which the artist painted almost exclusively the female form. He resided facing the sea, first at the Hôtel Beau Rivage and then at the Palais Cais de Pierlas at the end of the Cours Saleya, where his studio overlooked Old Nice and the Mediterranean.

The Bay of Angels, the bright sunlight, the lush vegetation then became a great source of inspiration for the artist.

A museum dedicated to him in the Cimiez district of Nice reveals Matisse's artistic evolution, his explorations of color and graphic design, and his work on various media. In addition to showcasing remarkable works, the museum offers insight into Matisse's creative process.
